WHAT IS IT?
Acupuncture originated in China, although it has also been used in other East Asian countries. Evidence suggests that it was practiced as long as 2,000 years ago, although supporters of it often claim that it has been in use for over 5,000 years.
Its Chinese philosophy is based on the idea that health is dependent on the flow of energy, Qi (pronounced chee), moving around the body. The aim of the treatment is to restore the balance of the universal energy, Qi, in the body, through the painless application of fine needles into strategic points. Qi consists of Yin and Yang and these two opposite, but complimentary, forces need to be in balance otherwise disease or illness occurs in the body.
Acupuncture needles are used in specific acupuncture points which give access to the meridians in the body through which the Qi flows so that adjustments can be made to balance the Yin and Yang thus restoring harmony and health.
WHAT CAN BE TREATED? SOME EXAMPLES ARE LISTED BELOW:
These conditions have shown possitive results in Randomized Controlled Trials and there are other conditions that have been shown to benefit from acupuncture in other forms of trials and with clinical experience. Acupuncture may be effective to relieve the symptoms of:
Acupressure, massage and cupping may also be used during treatment and offered as an alternative to needles.
WHO HAS ACUPUNCTURE?
Many poeple come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or to relieve specific pains. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but have no obvious diagnosis or to enhance their feeling of wellbeing. It is suitable for all ages including babies and children and can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine and other forms of treatment.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
Acupuncture needles are much finer than needles used for injections and blood tests. You may feel a tingling sensation or dull ache when the needles are inserted. The needles are single-use, sterile and disposable. Responses to treatment can sometimes include tiredness or mild dizziness and very occasionally minor bruising may occur. All such reactions are short lived.
You will be assessed regarding your overall health, symptoms and any medication currently being taken. After an explanation of your condition you will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing to the treatment. Only sterile, single use needles are used and the number of needles will depend on the problem being treated.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. For complex or long standing conditions one or two treatments per week for several months may be recommended. For acute problems, usually fewer visits are required, and for health maintenance, four sessions a year may be all that is necessary.
HOW LONG WILL AN INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT LAST?
A typical treatment will last 45- 60 minutes, however your first session may take up to 90 minutes as a full and detailed case history is taken to help fully understand your personal needs and get an overall assessment of your body energeties and how they are interacting within the body as a whole. This will enable me to identify the problem and agree with you what treatment plan is required for you personally.
